The Game of Education: Virtual Play

Overview

Welcome to the Game of Education—Virtual Play This page guides you through playing The Game of Education virtually using a video conferencing platform (like Zoom). Through this digital adaptation, you’ll experience all the key elements: private Role & Agenda assignments, a shared Scenario card, coin tracking, Power Card purchases, and the final scoring process. Even if players are scattered across different locations, this flow ensures a lively and authentic game experience.

Benefits of Playing The Game of Education Virtually

  • Flexible & Inclusive: Connect players from any location, removing travel barriers and scheduling conflicts.
  • Authentic Experience: Maintain the core decision-making and collaboration aspects, with private role/agenda links, scenario reveals, and live voting.
  • Rich Interaction: Zoom discussions and name-based coin tracking mirror real-life negotiation, bridging physical and digital boundaries.
  • Easy Reset & Replay: Quickly reset and start fresh, letting groups explore multiple scenarios or iterate on strategies in one session.

Virtual Play Page

See how easy The Game of Education works online. In this demo, the facilitator sets 8 players and instantly creates 8 private links—each showing a unique Role and Agenda. We open a few links so you can see exactly what players view. Then, a Scenario is generated to start the discussion, and a countdown timer tracks debate time. Finally, one click on Reset refreshes all decks for a new round. It’s fast, intuitive, and captures the spirit of the game—virtually.

Step-by-Step Virtual Flow

1. Facilitator Setup & Player Arrival

Facilitator Role

  • The facilitator (who does not actively play a role in the scenario) welcomes everyone on Zoom.
  • They share their screen and navigate to The Game of Education’s Virtual Game webpage.
  • They enter the number of players (2–8) and click Randomize Roles & Agendas.

Link Generation

  • Once randomized, a unique link is generated for each player’s secret Role and Agenda.
  • The facilitator shares each link privately with the respective player (e.g., via Zoom chat or direct message).

2. Player Introductions & Name Editing

 Review Role & Agenda

  • Each player opens their link in a browser tab, revealing their private Role and Agenda.
  • They spend a minute or two reading and planning their strategy.

Zoom Name Format

  • Players rename themselves in Zoom to show Name – Role – Coin Count, e.g. "Lynnette – HR Director – 5"
  • They then introduce themselves in character, briefly summarizing their role’s perspective.

3. Generating the Scenario

 Facilitator Action

  • The facilitator clicks Generate Scenario on the facilitator webpage, revealing a random Scenario card image.
  • They read it aloud for all players.

4. Discussion Timer

 Set Discussion Length

  • The facilitator enters a recommended time (e.g., 30 or 45 minutes) into the Countdown Timer field.
  • Upon clicking Start Timer, the countdown is displayed on the facilitator’s screen.

Stop Sharing

  • After confirming everyone sees the scenario, the facilitator stops screen-sharing so participants can more easily see each other’s Zoom videos.
  • The timer continues running in the facilitator’s browser.

5. Purchasing Power Cards

Coin & Power Mechanics

  • If any player decides to spend 5 coins on a Power Card, they announce it to the group.
  • The facilitator clicks Generate Power Card; a link (e.g., “Power Card 1”) is displayed.
  • They provide that link to the player privately, and the player subtracts 5 coins from their name in Zoom.
    • Example: “Lynnette – HR Director – 0” if she had 5 and spent them all.

Negotiation & Coin Updates

  • If coins are traded among players, they adjust their Zoom names to reflect the new totals, maintaining transparency.

6. Final Vote

 Time’s Up

  • Once the timer runs out (or the facilitator stops it manually), each player simultaneously casts their final vote (e.g., to Cooperate or Not) using the Zoom chat.
  • The group can then see how each participant voted and proceed to scoring.

Scoring & Reflection

At this point, the steps mirror an in-person game. Use the Scorecard to track points:

Cast Votes

  • Each player would normally show one side of a physical Voting Card.
  • Online, they reveal their choice in Zoom chat.

Decision Outcome

  • Tally the votes.
  • All Cooperate: Everyone gets +5 points.
  • Mixed Votes: Non-cooperators get +3 points; cooperators get +0.

Role Performance

  • Players vote for who best embodied their role.
  • Each vote = +1 point.
  • Record under “Role Performance.”

Best Negotiator

  • Players vote for who negotiated best.
  • Each vote = +1 point.
  • Record under “Best Negotiator.”

Agenda Fulfillment

  • Each player reveals if they accomplished their secret agenda.
  • Successful agendas = +2 points.
  • Record under “Agenda Fulfillment.”

Calculate Totals

  • Sum up all columns.
  • The highest total is the winner for that scenario.
    •  (Example) Player: Frances
      • Decision Outcome: 5
      • Role Performance: 2
      • Best Negotiator: 1
      • Agenda Fulfillment: 2
      • Total: 10

Reflection & Wrap-Up

Exit Your Role

  • Step out of the persona you adopted and return to your own professional perspective.

Discuss Reflection Prompts

  • You can visit the reflection prompts on thegameofeducation.com for deeper insights.
  • Encourage each participant to share what they learned, how real-world parallels emerged, and any next steps they might consider in genuine educational contexts.

Tips for a Smooth Virtual Session

 Screen-Sharing:

  • The facilitator shares their browser only when needed (randomizing roles, agendas, scenario).
  • For the main discussion, it can be more comfortable if everyone sees each other’s faces rather than the webpage.

Zoom Names:

  • Keeping your coin count in your display name is a handy reminder to yourself and others.

Communicate Clearly:

  • The facilitator keeps an eye on the timer.
  • Players announce coin trades or Power Card buys early, so the facilitator can generate links quickly.

Use the /reset Button:

  • If you want to start another scenario from scratch, the “Reset Entire Game” button reinitializes all Roles, Agendas, Scenarios, and Power cards, so you never have to re-run the server.

Summary

By following these steps, you’ll experience the same excitement and strategic decision-making of The Game of Education—without needing everyone in the same physical room. Whether you’re an educator, student, or curious participant, this Virtual Play approach retains the game’s core question: Can you leverage your influence to make complex decisions amid individual agendas?

Enjoy your digital session, and remember that thoughtful collaboration, negotiations, and well-managed coin usage often decide who comes out on top in The Game of Education!
